Comparison of Plankton Communities among Freshwater Prawn Post Larvae Rearing Ponds

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to compare the plankton communities among the freshwater prawn PL rearing ponds for a period of three months from August to October, 2008 at the Fisheries Field Laboratory Complex, BAU, Mymensingh. A qualitative and quantitative laboratory technique were undertaken to know the plankton communities. A total of 51 genera belonging to 6 planktonic groups were identified of which 40 genera of phytoplankton belonging to Bacillariophyceae (9), Chlorophyceae (20), Cyanophyceae (8), and Euglenophyceae (3) and 11 genera of zooplankton belonging to Rotifera (5) and Crustacea (6). Among the phytoplankton groups, Chlorophyceae was the dominant group in all treatments. During the study period, total abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton were found to be highest 100333 cells / L and 15277 cells / L both on 2 September in treatment T3 and T1, respectively. Whereas, least abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton were found 32900 cells/ L on 2 October in treatment T1 and 800 cell / L on 2 August in treatment T2. Significance relation was not found in growth performance of freshwater prawn PL with the abundance of Plankton.
