Abstract
A survey was conducted at Manirampur Upazila in Jessore district, among
30 prawn farmers to evaluate the prawn farming status in traditional gher
systems. It was found that 23.33% farmers practiced prawn monoculture,
while 36.66% farmers practiced prawn-carp polyculture and 40% farmers
practiced prawn-carp polyculture with dike gardening. Farmers stock
25140 PL/ha in prawn monoculture system, while 1117 carp fingerlings/ha
with 14730 PL/ha in polyculture systems. The results showed that 76%
of farmers regularly used both organic and inorganic fertilizers during
gher preparation. Almost all the farmers practice post
stocking management where 33.33% of farmers supplement snail meat to
juvenile prawns from July to October in addition to regular feeding. In
monoculture system, the average annual yield of prawn was estimated at
595 kg/ha, while yield for polyculture systems was estimated 417 kg/ha.
Average annual fish production was 625 kg/ha in prawn-carp polyculture
systems.
