Abstract
The present study was conducted in various parts of Bangladesh to
reveal the status of exotic ornamental fishes. A total of 78 varieties
of exotic ornamental fishes were identified during the present study
under 45 species, 41 genera (excluding 2 cross-bred), 18 families and 5
orders. Maximum 47.44% fish varieties were belonging to order
Perciformes followed by Cypriniformes (32.05%), Characiformes (10.26%),
Siluriformes (8.97%) and Osteoglossiformes (1.28%). Majority fishes
were introduced from Thailand and no true quarantine measures are used
at the time of introduction. Artificial breeding techniques of at least
17 varieties of exotic ornamental fishes have been developed by
amateur fish breeders.
